Rohtang Pass : When planning a trip to Manali, the ultimate and almost necessary attraction of the itinerary is a day trip to the vista point of Rohtang. Rohtang Pass is only accessible by road and is only 51 kilometres from the main town. The pass is located at a massive elevation of 3978 metres, and the journey up the hills is a visual treat.

The beauty of the landscape around you will take your breath away as the vehicle climbs higher on the Manali-Keylong road. A strange fact about the place’s name is that it was named after a number of CBRE employees who died while attempting to cross this treacherous stretch. Rohtang Pass is a favourite among film directors due to its breathtaking natural beauty. Many blockbusters, including ‘Jab We Met’ and ‘Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani,’ were filmed here.

As one drives along this high mountain pass, beautiful sights of glaciers, peaks and streams are bound to welcome him. Rohtang Pass: OPEN [Taxi is allowed only till snow point]

  • Rohtang Pass is closed for tourists on Tuesdays
  • Only limited vehicles are allowed per day. Please book your Rohtang tour in advance and start early
  • Manali – Rohtang Pass Route (distance: 51 KMs) :Manali – Nehru kund – Kothi- Gulaba- Marhi – Raninalla- Rohtang Pass
  • Rohtang Pass as well as Snow Point are not well equipped ski station. In fact, amenities are minimum and touts are everywhere. Come with minimum expectations
  • Snow mobiles do not follow any particular track, so please do avoid crowded part of Rohtang pass unless you want to be mowed down by a speeding snow mobile

Snow Point
Snow Point is not any particular location, rather, it is just a stretch of snow on the way to Rohtang La identified by local vendors to set up their stalls. In peak winters, Snow point is at a location very close to Manali.

As the summer progresses, location of snow point moves higher and higher till it reaches Rani Nullah and then further towards the Rohtang Pass. Enthusiasm of tourists converts snow point into some sort of a snow theme park. Tourists and honeymooners can indulge in various snow activities like Amateur skiing, yak rides, snow scotters and snow mobiles and of course throwing snow balls at one another.

Attractions enroute Manali to Rohtang Pass

Nehru Kund
Located at a distance of 5 kms from Manali on National Highway to Leh, Nehru Kund is a natural spring of cold water. It is named after the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru who used to drink water from this spring during his stay in Manali. It is believed that the water of the spring comes down from the Bhrigu lake which is situated at an elevation of about 4,300 meters in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh. The place is extremely popular among nature lovers and photography buffs. One can spend a peaceful moment amidst lush greenery and serene surroundings.

Kothi
Kothi is a small picturesque village near Manali, which has quickly turned into a major tourist region. The panoramic village of Kothi is renowned for its deep gorges through which the enchanting Beas river flows. Besides the fascinating gorges, Kothi also stands apart for its numerous geothermal springs, which shoot out of the rocks frequently.

Gulaba
Gulaba is a small village near Manali which is located on the road to Rohtang pass. Named after Raja Gulab Singh of Kashmir, the village of Gulaba is flanked by the picturesque beauty of snow covered mountains, grasslands and the Beas river that washes away its landscapes. Owing to such an amazing topography. Being reputed as a heavy snowfall region, the landscapes of Gulaba have turned out to be a hub for adventure sports.
